Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the data, the platform, and getting started.

Where does WellStrata’s data come from?

Directly from the public regulators of every state we cover — the Texas RRC, Oklahoma OCC, North Dakota DMR, New Mexico OCD, Colorado ECMC, Wyoming WOGCC, and others — plus FracFocus for completion chemicals. Production is cross-checked against EIA state totals so you can trust the numbers.

Which states and how many wells do you cover?

WellStrata covers 18+ US states plus the offshore Gulf of Mexico — more than 3.3 million wells across the major onshore and offshore producing basins, and growing. See the Data Coverage page for the exact, live counts and which datasets are loaded per state.

How fresh is the data and how often is it updated?

An automated ingestion pipeline syncs with each state regulator on a monthly cadence, and every record carries data-freshness metadata so you always know how current it is.

How accurate is the data? What are QC scores?

Every record gets a 0–100 quality score across four bands — Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Flagged — based on completeness, coordinate validation, and anomaly detection. Operator names are canonicalized so the same company isn’t split across a dozen spellings. You always know how much to trust each data point before you build on it.

Do I need to know SQL, GIS, or any special tools?

No. You can ask questions in plain English (“Top Wolfcamp B wells in Reeves County by 6-month oil, completed after 2020”) and get a ranked table in seconds, or point-and-click through the interactive map and filters. There’s no query language to learn.

What can I do beyond looking up wells?

Build P10/P50/P90 type curves, run ML production forecasts and refrac screening, benchmark operators across a basin, explore frac chemicals, track drilling permits and rig activity, and export everything to CSV/Excel or pull it via the API.

Is there a free trial? Do I need a credit card?

Yes — a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. You can sign up and start exploring in a couple of minutes.

How much does it cost?

Paid plans are per-seat across Standard, Professional, and Enterprise tiers, with no long-term lock-in. See the Pricing page for current rates and what’s included in each tier.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Plans are self-serve and there’s no annual contract required — you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel from your billing settings at any time.

Is my data private and secure?

WellStrata is a data-analytics tool — you don’t need to upload any of your proprietary well data to use it. Your account, saved well lists, screens, and queries are private to your organization, and we never sell your data.

Do you have an API?

Yes. There’s a clean, documented REST API with a full OpenAPI spec — filter by state, operator, formation, and QC score, paginate, export in bulk, and integrate WellStrata data directly into your own models and tools.

Who is WellStrata for?

Reservoir engineers, land and A&D analysts, and PE/acquisitions teams at independent operators and E&P companies — anyone who needs clean, trustworthy US oil & gas well data without an enterprise-scale price tag.
