Model a Reservoir, Not Just a Well: Meet Reservoir Builder

A single well is a data point. A decision is made on a reservoir. Reservoir Builder lets you group wells into an asset, add the drills you're proposing, and see aggregated production and NPV/DCF economics — all in the browser.

Most well-intelligence tools stop at the well. You can look up a well, fit its decline, read its EUR — one row at a time. But almost no decision is made one well at a time. You approve a development. You underwrite an asset. You compare this bench across these ten wells against a program of four new drills. The unit of the decision is the reservoir, not the well.

Reservoir Builder closes that gap. It’s a workspace where you assemble wells into a reservoir, drop in the wells you’re thinking about drilling, and roll the whole thing up into aggregated production and full economics — without exporting a thing.

Build a reservoir from what’s already on the map

A reservoir starts as a named, saved collection of wells. The point is to make populating it as fast as the way you already think about acreage, so there are three ways to add wells — and you’ll mix them:

  • Filter the map. Set state, formation, operator, and county, load the wells, and add the whole screen in one click — or just the set currently loaded. This is how you grab an entire bench across a play in seconds.
  • Click a well. Every candidate well on the map opens the same rich detail panel you know from the Wells Explorer — Production, Frac Job, Type Curve, Refrac, ML Forecast, Completion. Review it, then Add to reservoir right from the panel. No guessing from a dot.
  • Draw a polygon. For an area the attribute filters can’t express — a unit, a lease block, an AMI — draw it on the map and every loaded well inside it joins the reservoir.

Members render as bright points on the map and as a table you can prune. Adding and removing is instant; the reservoir is yours, saved, and (if you choose) shared.

Add the wells that don’t exist yet

Here’s where a reservoir stops being a list and starts being a model. Switch to New drill, click the map where you’re proposing a location, and give it a name, a state, a formation, and a stream. Reservoir Builder forecasts it immediately from that play’s type curve — a P50 EUR, an IP, the peer count behind it, and a full decline you can see on a chart.

New drills render as a distinct triangle marker so they never blur into your producing wells. Now your reservoir holds both realities at once: the wells that are making money and the wells you’re deciding whether to drill.

See the asset, not the wells

With members and drills in place, the aggregate view does what a spreadsheet of exports never quite does cleanly: it sums them. The production chart shows the reservoir’s combined monthly oil and gas history, and — once you run the forecast — a dashed forward curve that extends it: existing wells declined from their recent rate, plus every new drill’s type-curve forecast, stacked on top. You’re looking at the reservoir’s past and its proposed future on one axis.

Economics, in the browser

Aggregated volumes are only half of a decision. The other half is whether the program pays. Reservoir Builder runs a transparent, tunable DCF model right in the page:

  • Set your price deck (oil and gas, with escalation), NRI, opex (fixed + per-barrel + per-Mcf), discount rate, forecast horizon, and drill capex.
  • Hit Run, and you get the reservoir’s NPV, undiscounted cash flow, net revenue, and payout month, plus a cumulative-discounted-cash-flow chart.
  • Existing wells are valued per well — each declined from its own recent rate — so you also get a per-well NPV column in the table. New drills use dual-stream (oil + gas) type curves and each carries its standalone NPV, so you can see which proposed locations actually clear the hurdle.

Every assumption is visible and editable. This isn’t a black-box “value” — it’s a model you can defend in a meeting, adjust live as someone challenges the price deck, and watch the NPV move.

Made for a team

A reservoir is rarely one person’s. The owner can share it with teammates as a viewer (read) or editor (add/remove wells and drills), so the reservoir engineer, the economist, and the asset lead are all working the same model instead of three divergent spreadsheets.

Where it fits

Reservoir Builder is a Professional feature (up to three reservoirs) and Enterprise (unlimited). It sits on top of the same data and forecasting engines that power the rest of WellStrata — the QC-scored production, the type curves, the ML forecasts — so the numbers in your reservoir are the numbers everywhere else in the app.

The well was never the decision. The reservoir is. Now you can model it.
